SPRING 2008
|
From the Director It has been a busy time for the Hendersonville Arts Council. Classes for adults and children have started back and are in full swing. The children’s drama classes recently performed for their parents. Plans are underway for the 9th Annual Festival of Artisans & Performers that will be in early May. Entertainment will offer a variety of performances that the entire family will enjoy. If you have attended any of our activities, you know that all our concerts, gallery exhibits, and festival are free. The HAC has tried to keep class fees as reasonable as possible with most of the fees going to the teachers/instructors and make the classes affordable for all. Recently the Board of the Hendersonville Arts Council decided to not have a fund raiser this year but to seek contributions that will go directly for general operating dollars (heat, electricity, utilities, supplies, etc.) Through these contributions you will be keeping the arts in our community alive and a historic site open to the public. To those of you who are current contributors we thank you. If you are a past contributor we hope you will support us again this year. And to those of you who have never contributed we hope you join and become an arts patron. Your contribution is tax deductible and should be mailed to the Hendersonville Arts Council P.O. Box 64, Hendersonville, TN 37077-0064. Emma Dye, Executive Director |

Hendersonville Arts Council takes Music to the Schools
For a number of years the Hendersonville Arts Council has taken different art programs into the school. Recently the Council took music to the schools that provided an educational component for the students. The students experienced meeting and hearing a group of percussionists who shared the different aspects of their music with a variety of their instruments. The vibraphone, acoustic congas and shakers, Steel Pans or Steel Drums and more modern electronic percussion were demonstrated.
The musicians were Jerry, Tachoir, Tom Roady, Todd London and Roy Voght. Tachoir on vibraphone is an active artist/clinician for the Ludwin/Musser division of Conn-Selmer Company and a graduate of Berklee College of Music. Roady, an independent multi-percussionist and active as a recording session musician, played acoustic congas and various percussion instruments along with a relatively new electronic device called the “Hand Sonic” which can be programmed to play any type of the 1000 internal sounds from percussion to sounds of birds and thunder. London is a steel drummer/multi-percussionist and a faculty member of Belmont University and plays mostly the steel drums in this group. Vogt plays bass and is a faculty member of Belmont University.
Schools that participated were Station Camp High School, Merrol Hyde Magnet School, Knox doss Middle School, Hendersonville High School, and Pope John Paul II High School. The Music in Schools program was done with the help of the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Musicians Performance Trust.
